Turcaret Turcaret is an 18th-century French satirical drama which is a tale weaved around the bourgeoisie and a society built on credit. It is critical to understand this in order to begin to discover the hidden ideas and messages behind the stage set and props. In Turcaret the stage design and props, along with the elegant costumes deliver the main theme of wealth and greed. The stage is embellished with meaningful costumes and intriguing overlapping of colors which bring about the farces mellow comic ironies among hidden symbols and ideas. In the play Turcaret, the stage design played a key role of significance, mainly to stress the theme of money and greed. The stage consisted of a painted backdrop, a small bench at center stage, and a floor painted green and black, however gold in the middle where the bench is placed. The painted backdrop mirror was very significant for this production because such a prop was included in most French satirical farces at the time.
