What is the relationship between diapause and ageing? The concept of diapause is an intriguing and potentially rewarding topic for biogerontology research. Diapause is important to some of the central issues of ageing, for example, long-lived mutants and dietary restriction. The mechanisms behind diapause contribute to the well documented, and remarkable, plasticity of ageing. The ageing process is clearly influenced by genetics and some of this genetic regulation overlaps with genes that control diapause. Clearly diapause is worthy of serious investigation, but what exactly is it? According to Tatar (1), diapause is �a state of arrested development accompanied by physiology for somatic persistence.� There is an assortment of organisms which, at some point in their life-cycle, engage in a diapause phase, however, it is the insects that make particular use of this life strategy (2).
