Edgar Allan Poe: The Madness Poe's writings and life were insane due to his substance abuse. Even though Poe was insane he ranks among Ernest Hemmingway, and Mark Twain as one of the top literary stars in the world. The problems he had in life transpired on his characters in many of his works. Poe was a prolific writer, who published over 100 stories and poems by the end of his life. January 19, 1809 Edgar Allan Poe was born in the great state of Boston, where his mother and father were actors. By the time he could walk his mother Elizabeth Arnold Poe died - December 8, 1811 at the age of 24. A month later his father abandoned him. Edgar was taken in and adopted by a wealthy couple - John and Frances Allan. He considered them to be his real family. July 1815 he moved with his newly instituted family to Britain. At 9 he began attending the Manour House near London. Only two years later they left Britain to live in New York. They moved to Fifth Street were Poe started attending Clarke School. And again in 1823 Edgar change schools again - he transferred to William Burke's School.......
