Blue Notes Often considered the greatest female jazz singer of all time, Billie Holiday was truly a motivational and inspirational woman of her time. Her very distinctive voice and personality on stage captivated the world around her. The documentation of Holiday’s life is known to be imprecise at times, as many dates and instances are not known to be entirely true. However all agree that the early life of Billie Holiday was very harrowing. The trials and tribulations that Holiday underwent are what helped mold her into the woman and singer that she became. Her singing expressed an incredible depth of emotion that spoke of hard times and injustice as well as triumph. Born in Baltimore, Maryland on April 7, 1915 Eleanora Fagan Gough, who later became known as Billie Holiday was destined to have a hard life. Her musician father Clarence Holiday (who played guitar for Fletcher Henderson) left the household when Eleanora was at a very young age, leaving her mother Sadie Gough to solely raise her. Eleanora was often living in poverty and decided to drop out school in the fifth grade so......
