In 1982, the U.S. Supreme Court stated during the case of Board of Education, Island Trees School District v. Pico, �Local school boards may not remove books from school library shelves simply because they dislike the ideas contained in those books.� Even though the U.S. Supreme Court said this, school boards, and even parents, will try anything to have a particular book removed. In America today, it seems as if students do not have the choice as to what they read. Adults make that decision instead; yet this censoring has not been an issue in the world only today. The censoring, banning, and burning of books are events that have taken place throughout history. The burning and banning of books started many centuries ago. In 221 BC, Shi Huang Di became the first emperor of the Qin Dynasty; his goal was to impose his ideals of government on other Chinese states that he had conquered and to have a unified empire.
