Hamlet is commonly recognised as one of the most magnificent works of English Literature, seated right at the pinnacle of the English Literary ‘Canon’. This piece of text has achieved such a high status due to the artistic creation of the protagonist Hamlet. He is a character with a profoundly developed persona, possessing both strengths and flaws. Hamlet is used to delve into and expose the tensions which were present at the time of this play’s writing, and with cynicism and introspectiveness as two of his discerning traits, he is a fitting representation of the Renaissance. Another feature of Hamlet’s character is the exploration of universal ideas through his actions. These timeless ideas mean that they apply to the contemporary context as they once did to the Renaissance, making them both powerful and influential. Hamlet’s character is developed in detail through his soliloquies given throughout the play.
