For more than twenty years child obesity has been increasing at an alarming rate. As shown in the graph below, the percent of obese children aged 12 to 17 has more than tripled between 1978 and 2004. It is estimated by the centers for disease control that ten percent of preschooler and fifteen percent of children from ages six to nineteen years are overweight and are at risk of becoming obese. Because of this, weight related health problems like diabetes, high blood pressure and depression are becoming much more common (butter ads). There has been much debate of the causes of this increase, some are modifiable, and others are not. Some of the modifiable causes are the lack of physical activity. This is often caused by the increased amount of sedentary behavior. Most of children�s� time is often spent on the couch watching television or playing game consoles or sitting in front of the computer searching the web.
