When I started working as a bartender, the first thing I was trained to do was cleaning the bar extremely well. It not only looks good, but there is the hygiene factor; no one wants to drink from dirty glasses at a sticky bar. Well, one of the secrets of making the bar shine is to spray it with Windex, and then use a towel soaked in hot water to wipe it over. You can just picture a Cypriot cleaning the bar with a window cleaner. Therefore, I understand my customers’ inevitable comment: “So it’s true you people carry a Windex around all the time.” At first, I would talk for hours about not liking this movie (I only laughed when the American said stupid things in Greek). Now, I just nod and keep on doing what I’m doing. Sometimes, you don’t really know if society influences movies or the other way around. So is the film “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” really about Greek tradition, heritage and culture? Or is it sarcasm towards the Greek-American community for their backward way of thinking?
