Assumptions about Gender Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

H.E. Bates and Charlotte Perkins Gilman make specific assumptions about the gender roles of men and women, which become apparent to the audience through their short stories, “The Good Corn” and “Turned”. These assumptions; that a woman’s purpose in life is to have children; that women are not capable to do things on their own; that men are depended on by women and that men are superior to women; are all believed to be true without proof, and are portrayed with the dominant reading of the text. These assumptions generally appear as gaps in the text, and are reinforced through the construction of the text. The context the texts have been written from also determines the assumptions that are made. The assumption that a woman’s purpose in life is to have children is apparent in “The Good Corn”. We recognise this as to be the main assumption about the gender roles of women in this short story due to the emotions that Mrs Mortimer expresses in the text.
