There were a few reasons why Europeans participated in the Atlantic slave trade. There was the power that could be gained and relations that could form. And competition between other European countries was also a reason for participating in the Atlantic slave trade. Europeans began making attempts with Africa out of curiosity, appreciation, and preconceptions. First, the Portuguese began setting up trading posts and trading forts, the most important one being El Mina. El Mina allowed the Portuguese to exercise some control with few personnel since all they needed was the local rulers consent. These various trading posts and forts allowed the Europeans to gain some power over Africa and also to acquire goods. Although Europeans were not able gain complete control over Africa, they were able to gain some. This was one of the reasons why Europeans participated in the Atlantic slave trade. The Portuguese acquired mostly gold from their trade relationship with Africa, but slaves also became important. The first slave brought directly to Portugal was in 1441.
