The Nature of Competition Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In today’s culture, there is a constant pressure to perform and to win in organized sports. This emphasis on winning can be witnessed at all sports levels from little league to the professional ranks. It is a pressure that has always seemed to exist and does not appear to be leaving anytime soon. There are many contributors to this constant pressure to win which include parent and coach expectations, teammate and fan pressure, human nature, the media, and personal expectations. Parent and coach pressure is a big factor in competition. As young players, we want to please our parents and make them proud. Some parents make this almost impossible as they attempt to relive their childhood through their children. Everyone has experienced that parent yelling on the sidelines of any sport. Sometimes this is a positive motivation, but for some children this pressure deters them from playing and enjoying sports. For example, when I played youth softball my friend, who was a pitcher, stormed off the mound because the pressure from her mother screaming at her pushed her to the edge. ......
