The prisons of the United States have been overcrowded with people who have committed rape and/or murder, and drunk driving offenders who should be behind bars. People who commit violent crimes or are a violent threat to society should be the majority of inmates housed in our prisons and jails for longer periods of time. Why should a person who grows and/smokes marijuana be put behind bars if he or she is not a violent threat to the people around him/her? Granted marijuana relaxes a person, but he or she is not considered a threat when driving a vehicle, like a drunk driver who is not in control of his or her reflexes and can cause a fatal accident. The author says treatment would be more affective for non-violent drug offenders than putting them behind bars, and I agree. Treatment programs are available while prisoners are incarcerated, but will the treatment actually help change the person and teach him/her to lead a productive life after being released into society? A wider variety of drug treatment programs are available outside of prisons and jails that can help non-viol......
