Abraham Lincoln claimed that slavery „was somehow“, the cause of the war and few would disagree-without slavery the Civil War would never have happened. However slavery was not the only cause of the war; without the contribution of other factors, such as the continued western expansion of the United States, the issue of slavery may not have led to war.
Slavery had originally existed troughout the United States, but flourished in the labour intensive plantations of the south. Conditions for slavery were much less favourable in the north, and gradually it was abolished. By the early nineteenth century the United States was divided between the slave owning south and the free labour north.
In the north there was some support for those who wished to abolish slavery altogether, bout most people merely considered it distasteful, and were determined to prevent it spreading. In the south, however, slavery was the foundation of the economy - slave grown cotton supplied the factories of Europe and generated great wealth. More than that slavery was the foundation of ist society-even poor......
