The importance of being Ernest. 2002 vs original ‘GOOD INTENTIONS BAD RESULT’ Oscar Wilde’s classic satire ‘The importance of being Earnest’ was originally written for the stage; designed to shock the buttoned-down audiences of the 1800’s, to make them laugh while critiquing their own shallow existences. Wilde savages the triviality of marriage as a social step-ladder, the hypocrisy of the Victorian manners and sincerity shown perfectly in Algernon’s and Jack’s informing their “darlings” that their names are Ernest which “inspires absolute confidence” but the fact that they are lying makes them not ‘Earnest’ at all which is a reflection of the muddled values of the Victorian era and he also utilizes his trademark wit to stick the play together whether through the use of his famous one liners or the way his characters trivialize serious matters and solemnize trivial matters to a ridiculous degree and not to mention the absurdly fast-paced, implausible ending.
