Originally the image on a coin was there to indicate who had issued the coin and “to validate it by reference to the power or integrity of the issuer” Leaders of nations, cities and communities have always sought ways of cementing their power, and images on coins have been used to reflect this. John Casey tells us that this first propagandist use of the coin was developed in the issues of the Hellenistic rulers after Alexander the Great. These later came to a climax in the issues of the Roman imperial period. In order for us to see what role coinage played as a propaganda tool, we must first define what coinage actually is, as done so by Casey:
“A coin is a form of money and may be a piece of currency. Money is normally defined as anything which serves as a medium of exchange and a store of wealth. Coins, then, are simply a form of money which may also serve as a currency; or they are a form of currency which may be money.”
