JOSEPHINE BAKER
(1906-1975)
Josephine Baker was born in a poor, black slum in East St. Louis, Illinois, on June 3, 1906. Her mother was 21 years old at the time. She was mixed with Indian and Black. She was referred to as a Native American African American. Her mother and father were both slaves in South Carolina. Her mother was black and her father was Indian. Her mothers name was Carrie MacDonald (a dancer) and her father was Eddie Carson (a drummer). Josephine had five husbands, Willie Wells, Willie Baker (whose last name she kept), Jean Lion, Jo Bouillon and Robert Brady (who she stayed with until her death). Her marriage to Mr. Brady was never legal. They went to an empty church in Acapulco, Mexico in 1973 and exchanged marriage vows among themselves. There was no preacher there, but they remained together until Josephine died.
When Josephine was eight years old, she was hired to a white woman as a maid. She slept in a coal cellar with a pet dog. If she would make a mistake and put too much soap in the laundry, she would be scalded on the hands by hot water. At ......
