Animals have been used in medical research for thousands of years, but they were always thought of as machines whose sole purpose was to serve humans. It was not until after the nineteenth century that animal protection groups were formed. Since that time, there has been a never-ending debate about whether or not it is ethical to use animals in medical research. Scientists believe that it is necessary to use animals in order to gain more knowledge and information about how to treat various illnesses. On the other hand, animal rights activists believe that it is cruel and inhumane to use animals for the benefit of human kind. The animal right activists feel that there needs to be high standards for the care and treatment of animals used in medical research. However, it is necessary to use animals in medical research, because great advances have been made in medicine, such as a vaccine for hepatitis B, and new ways to gain compatible organs for transplants.
