The great Gatsby has many prominent themes. Among the most important are how alcohol affected the social world of the 1920’s, allowing freedom from one’s own social fears, and how violence and misfortune is the result of moral corruption and self-centered irresponsibility. In addition, cars represented eccentric individuality and Fitzgerald used colours to either represent a metaphor or events that have either happened or are yet to happen. "Cocktails permeate the garden outside until the air is alive with chatter and laughter" (Fitzgerald 42). Alcohol directly affects the mood and sociability of the people in the novel and was a major contributor to the energetic nature of America at the time. With the use of it, Gatsby ensures his parties will always be successful. In fact he thought alcohol was so important, he gave free drinks to his guests at every party. Consuming alcohol, it seems, is a necessary evil for the hedonistic and materialistic people of the era.
