Harley Davidson began in 1903 in a garage. The company had one full-time employee. It was incorporated in 1907, having sold 50 motorcycles. Harley was developing revolutionary technology that took the industry by storm. They often won races to attract attention. In 1918, they became the world’s largest motorcycle company. In the 1920’s, when other companies were struggling, Harley made a few wise decisions. Harley chose to make large investments in research and development, improving their motorcycles, focusing on reliability, and improving product quality. In doing so, Harley-Davidson gained distinctive competencies through advances in technology, a focus on innovation, and continuous improvement.
