Atherosclerosis is a type of arteriosclerosis. It comes from the Greek words athero, meaning gruel or paste, and sclerosis, translating to hardness. It involves deposits of fatty substances, cholesterol, cellular waste products, calcium and fibrin in the inner lining of an artery. There are many risk factors to take into consideration when looking at atherosclerosis including: § Elevated cholesterol levels, particularly low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol. § Elevated blood triglyceride levels. § Being a smoker or being exposed to tobacco smoke. § Having high blood pressure. § Diet. Eating fatty foods (particularly those rich in hydrogenated oils) and foods that are overly processed are believed to contribute towards heart disease. § Having diabetes. § Living a sedentary lifestyle. § Being overweight. § Dealing poorly with ongoing stress.
