Fears in Oedipus the King Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

To most people, living a life of fear seems unreal and impractical. However, one can make an argument that every action made is done out of fear for the consequence that follows. In the play Oedipus the King, written by Sophocles, the main character, Oedipus, lives his life in fear; this is metaphoric for how both people in the past and present live their lives in fear as well. Each person lives their life with three basic fears, the fear of betrayal, loss, and the future, that, even if only subconsciously, dictate their actions. In the play Oedipus the King, Oedipus fears betrayal from people he trusts and the loss of loved ones which leads him to become more eccentric than he was. Near the beginning of the story, Tiresias confronts Oedipus about the prophesy that Oedipus is destined to. In this passage, Oedipus is outraged with Tiresias’ foresight and is convinced that he, along with others, is out to destroy Oedipus. Later in the play, Oedipus is fearful that Creon is out to steal all that Oedipus has and accuses Creon of these actions by saying, “You who are convicted as my murd......
