For the majority of the movie, Luke and his fellow prisoners appear to struggle towards the same goal of freedom from the �bosses� of the prison society. Luke�s unique charisma and carefree attitude seem to draw his fellow prisoners into a world, in which prison life is interesting and livable, and the �bosses� never ending struggle to maintain the order and civilization of the prison community, can be reckoned with. It is not until Luke�s definition of freedom subtly changes through his frustrating quest for freedom, both in and outside the prison community, that Luke becomes a hindrance upon the life of his fellow prisoners. By the end of the film, Luke�s comradery with, and positive influence on, the other prisoners are completely negated by the defeatist attitude they are left with after his death.
