Digging is a reflective poem, which looks into the past and family traditions of the poet, Seamus Heaney. Heaney was born into a farming family and many of his poems looked into this theme and his history, In many cases he looked up to his elders and the work they did. Digging is a prime example of this. Heaney allows the audience to enter his past and understand its importance and how it affects and relates to him today. The poet uses recall and memories along with language throughout the poem to help the readers to understand its significance.
We establish early in the poem that it is about Heaney himself and he is digging into his past with his pen to write a poem which celebrates and honours his family and their tradition of being men who worked the land.
