World Literature I Othello Jealousy :The Green-Eyed Monster In Othello, one of the central themes is jealousy. Jealousy according to the Encarta World English Dictionary is described as a state of being: envious, covetous, resentful, green with envy, desirous, bitter, which also causes a person to become protective, suspicious, wary, watchful, mistrustful, and possessive of another person. Jealousy in this play leads to a lack of trust, erroneous assumptions and ultimate tragedy. Shakespeare portrays the effects of this predominant theme throughout the play, using lago’s character as an extreme definition of jealousy and what it can lead a person into doing. Jealousy is a common thread among the human race in everyday life. Shakespeare presents this theme in order to show the audience that Iago could be anyone one of us at any given time in our lives, if we let jealousy control our thinking and behavior.
