Cathedral and The Storm Comparative Composition Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Literature is not about objectively reporting an event like the newspapers attempt to do; literature is more like an editorial about a fictionalized event. Literature involves much more than recounting a plot. Elements such as character, tone, setting, symbols, style, theme, what is selected, what is omitted, and what is revealed, all comprise a story and reflect the author’s attitude toward the reader. Attitude can also be found in the subtleness and suggestions of the author’s chosen words. The following authors, Raymond Carver and Kate Chopin, demonstrate a distinction between their attitudes toward the reader in accordance with how they want their story to be subjectively received. In my opinion Kate Chopin is a very detached, non-judgmental author. I have come to this conclusion based on my reading of her short story titled, “The Storm.” In “The Storm” there is a complete lack of moral references. The author chose not to apply any moral or value judgments to the characters’ adulterous affair. Throughout the story, I did not find one single instance where the author wrot......
