In today’s society there are mental heath care centers all over the world, but in the 1800’s that was not the case. The mentally ill of the nineteenth century were viewed as demon-possessed or characterized as senseless animals (National Mental Health Association). At that time, it was thought that the insane and mentally ill could never be cured. The mentally ill were kept in jails throughout the world. People with mental illnesses ranging from mild to severe were being held in the same cells with prostitutes, drunks, common t hefts, and hardened criminals, in unheated, unfurnished, foul smelling quarters. (Viney and Zorich 1982) But starting in March of 1841, Dorothea Dix was about to change the way the world viewed the mentally ill. “I never knew my child hood,” (Schlaifer, 1991) is the only thing Dorothea would say about her child hood in her later years.
