Aids stands for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. Acquired means you can get infected with it. Immune Deficiency means a weakness in the body�s system that fights diseases. Syndrome means a group of health problems that make up a disease (AIDS 2001). AIDS affects the immune system. The cause of AIDS is a virus called the human immunodeficiency virus, or HIV. HIV is a retrovirus (an RNA virus; a virus whose genetic material is RNA). In infected persons, HIV is present in body fluids such as blood and semen.HIV attacks the helper T cells of the immune system. When HIV enters the body, the immune system recognizes it as an antigen and responds to it as it would to any antigen. However, for reasons that are not understood, the body�s defences are unsuccessful. HIV infects the helper T cells and remains within these cells for months or even years without producing any symptoms. When HIV suddenly becomes active, it reproduces, spreads, and destroys the helper T cells. The decrease in helper T cells weakens the immune system.
