The theoretical perspectives of developmental psychology can be divided in two sections. These are stage theories and learning theories. The learning theories include the behaviourist theory (classical conditioning and operant conditioning) and social learning theory. Freud, Piaget, Selmon and Erickson divided their theories in stages and based their theories on observation whilst others like Watson, Bandura, Skinner and Pavlov based their theories on what influences the child�s behaviour. This is called behaviourism. Cooley and Mead talked about the self concept of an individual which relates to what a child learns from the society around him. Freud and Piaget both described their theories in terms of stages but while Freud conversed about the innate and the sexual desire of the child, Piaget talked about how the environment influences the child�s behaviour. According to Freud what influences the child�s behaviour are the thoughts, feelings and desires which the child has in his mind.
