To what extent is closure achieved with the death(s) of the principal characters in tragedy? Discuss with reference to two of the plays studied. This essay will look closely at the concept of closure within Shakespearean tragedy. The two plays which will be analysed are the plays Anthony and Cleopatra and Romeo and Juliet. The essay will also discuss to what extent closure has been achieved by the deaths of its principal characters and whether this is in fact, a satisfying closure for that of the reader? It will also debate the nature of tragedy and whether these two plays conform to its particular essence. By way of introduction, it is important to note and to question the nature of tragedy. This is in fact not easy. It is therefore poignant to realise that every play interprets tragedy differently.
