Alfred Tennyson was born in Sommersby, England, a small town outside of London on August 6, 1809. He was born the fourth out of twelve children with his father, George, being a major part of a church. His father was a reverend and taught his sons a private education. Ironically enough he was an alcoholic and a lot of times he was unable to live out a Christian life. Even though his father was a major part of the church, when he was on his deathbed, he claimed not to be a Christian. His mother, Elizabeth, supported the Evangelical movement and did not regard herself as a Christian either. Even as a young teenager Tennyson considered himself as a poet. At the age of fourteen, he and his brother composed a collection of poetry titled �Poems by Two Brothers.� Tennyson�s childhood idols were Byron and Scott of poetry. In 1827, Tennyson studied at Trinity College in Cambridge, England from 1827 to 1831.
