Mayor of Casterbridge tension in Chapter XXIX Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
Chapter 29 of the Mayor of Casterbridge brings forward numerous tensions into the story and strengthens others previously mentioned earlier in the novel into the equation. Thomas Hardy helps create these by using some of his trademark techniques to help build these tensions. The use of strong coincidences is used throughout to place characters in compromising positions, and also his incredible skill at manipulating the reader to change their opinions on certain characters, most prominently on Michael Henchard; with whom we finally start to see a good side to his character.
The chapter opens with Lucetta “bounding along the road to Port-Bredy” Thomas Hardy tells us that this was “curious” – and should be noticed. This leads us to believe she has arranged to meet someone. Especially when considering the fact that she stops walking exactly a mile down the road. It is here that Hardy confirms the fact that she is meeting someone when “she strained her eyes up the lessening road…..She sighed one word –‘Donald’”. When she realizes that no one is on the road she turns to retreat.
