“The Sebastopol Sketches” and Leo Tolstoy’s Criticism of the Officer Class Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

“The Sebastopol Sketches,” written in 1855, is a narrative based on Leo Tolstoy’s personal experiences as an officer in the Russian army during the Siege at Sebastopol. It is a work that allows Tolstoy to express his emotions and opinions concerning the war, and also the nature of the officers involved in the war. Urged on by patriotism, Tolstoy enters the war with fervent enthusiasm and high regard for the officers. By the third installment to the book, “Sebastopol in August,” Tolstoy has become disgusted by both the corruption among the army and the atrocities of war. He was appalled by the lack of respect the officers showed the infantrymen, which he shows through personal conversations between the officers while sitting the comfort of a posh apartment among the war torn area. By the end of the book, Tolstoy is completely disenchanted with both war and the army. Tolstoy’s tone in the story, “Sebastopol in December,” is quite positive towards the war.
