Hawthorne’s Use of Literary Elements in the Scarlet Letter Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

A Puritan can be best described as a person that strictly fuses its religion and law to create their attitude, character, and actions. Nathaniel Hawthorne in The Scarlet Letter shows the extremity that Puritans experience to judge, criticize, and treat offenders of the law. In this novel, we have the story of Hester Prynne, and the consequences that came with her actions of having a relationship with someone else after being married. In the Puritanical era, this was seen not only as breaking the colonial law, but also the Higher divine law, thus making it morally wrong. Unlike them, Hawthorne perceives the situation differently and disapproves of the Puritan’s harsh and biased critiques towards Hester. Through Hawthorne’s use of allusions, imagery, tone, and strong diction, he is able to show his attitudes towards the Puritans to be unfavorable and cynical. Hawthorne uses imagery in these selected passages as a way to let his readers acknowledge the Puritans in their harsh ways.
