More than 40 million people around the globe are infected with HIV/AIDS, which is responsible for more deaths each year than any other infectious disease. The HIV/AIDS epidemic is mostly concentrated in Africa, where the virus has come at enormous human costs. 4.9 million new infections happened in 2004 alone and over 27 million have died since the first case in 1980. (AIDS/HIV) Although new treatments are often successful in slowing the progression from HIV to AIDS and from AIDS to death, they are unaffordable and unavailable in many of the countries where the disease hits the hardest. Without science-based research and prevention that are aimed at helping the local infectees and the will power of the infectees we can forget about stopping this epidemic.
