Scientific research has proven that antioxidants are substances that can prevent damage done to cells by free radicals. Vitamins E, C and beta carotene are the antioxidants that are being referred to that protect these cells. These antioxidants can help to prevent cancer, heart disease and also slow down the dreaded aging process. A free radical is any molecule that has an unpaired electron, any electrically charged particle spinning in a lonely orbit and searching for another electron to pair up with. These free radicals can cause major damage to cells. They can make a fatty cell membrane leak and cause the whole cell to collapse. But if the cell that the free radical encounters with is a protein or an enzyme, the radical might puncture or shave off a piece of the cell. If this is done, it will destroy or decrease its level of performance. But in one of the worst case scenarios, the cell that is attacked by the free radical could be a DNA cell, and a cell mutation could result. If this occurs, it can possibly lead to cancer.
