Are Failed States a Threat to America?: An Analysis Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Near the end of his tenure, President George Washington warned the United States of America to be wary of foreign entanglements and imperialistic folly in foreign policy as he was acutely aware of the dangers they posed. For the first hundred or so years, America successfully avoided being drawn into such conflicts. However, due to the entrance of the US into international commerce and trade, America was slowly drawn into the realm of international intervention with policies like President Wilson's Open Door Policy and the instability caused by the end of the era of colonialism. Before the Cold War, however, America was able to avoid heavy involvement in localized conflict because small localized fighting was not perceived as a threat to the US. More recently, in the post-colonial era, many scholars have argued that instead of invasion, countries must be concerned with failed states and preventing weak states from failing. Policymakers and academics have given reasons that span from increased drug trafficking and terrorism to the spread of AIDS and poverty (Fukuyama, 1 ) to ju......
