community observation was with the Faltis Chidren�s Shelter in Summersville, West Virginia. I will attempt to describe the experience with a combination of facts and non-bias opinions. The shelter is a non-profit organization that receives its� funds from private donations and subsidies from the state of West Virginia and the Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR). The shelter is an old school that has the maximum capacity for ten children ages 7 to 17 who have been referred to the shelter by the judicial system or DHHR. At the time I visited the shelter, the shelter had nine residents, three males and six females. The staffing was adequate in proportion to the number of residents. The on-shift supervisor spoke and accompanied me on a tour of the facility. It is here that I met some of the children who were all in a family type recreational room watching television. The on-shift supervisor who I will call Larry (not his real name), as I signed a waiver not to disclose real names or personal information, spoke to me very candidly and answered all of my questio......
