Some people may say there is a large difference between animals and themselves. Of course, as everyone knows, the major difference would be the usage of language. Scientists have begun to debate this in the past 30 years, as they are researching language used by apes. Some researchers have made extraordinary claims in the linguistic capabilities of chimpanzees. Doubters and researchers have gone back and forth on the subject. One of the main problems in getting research scientists to agree is that there is not a universally accepted definition of language. Duane Rumbargh describes language as an open system of communication (Dhiman, 2003). Some people say that just because apes can communicate through sign language it does not make them human like. One of the most well known researched apes in the field of language field is Koko, the gorilla. In 1971 Francine (Penny) Patterson met Koko, a female, lowland gorilla when she was doing a study at Stanford in San Francisco.
