Lowering the Drinking Age to 18 in the United States Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The public policy that I have chosen to address is lowering the legal drinking age, in the United States, from the age of twenty-one to eighteen. The current drinking age was raised to twenty-one in 1984 when Congress passed the National Minimum Purchase Age Act. This required that all states raise their minimum purchase and public possession of alcohol age to twenty-one. States that did not abide by this faced a reduction in highway funds under the Federal Highway Aid Act. They also felt that if they raised the minimum drinking age it would save a significant number of lives. It was determined that the three years difference between a twenty-one year old and an eighteen year old were significant enough to make a large difference in decision making while drinking. They also believed that if the drinking age was raised, people would drink more responsibly, thinking ahead of consequences involved with drinking.
