Voltaire Voltaire was an important thinker of the eighteenth century. He was born in 1694 in Paris as Fran�ois Marie Arouet. He took the pen name Voltaire when he wrote Oepide while imprisoned for writing a play about Phillip II, Duke of Orl�ans. Voltaire was a writer and philosopher who was extremely sceptical and believed firmly in rationalization. Voltaire was practical in his approach to philosophy, thus didn�t pander about in unanswerable questions. His questions were focused on things that affected one�s life. Religion was a great question during his time. Voltaire was especially interested in the hypocrisy in the institution of religion. He was very critical of anyone who believed in something without proof. He apposed Christianity and the double standards the religion bred. Voltaire believed that one shouldn�t believe all the stories of a religion without understanding from where those stories come from.
