�Misinterpreting Africa� Ever since Europeans colonists set foot on the continent of Africa they have misunderstood the people of the continent and their culture greatly. We still see evidence of this misunderstanding in modern culture today and in our recent history such as the civil rights movement here in the United States. These misunderstandings can be portrayed by the false image that these people projected of the African culture. The image they projected to the rest of Europe was one of cultureless savages. The colonist�s intent was to use this to make it easier for them to subject these people to their imperial rule. Once they got people to believe that the Africans were less than human it was much easier to enslave those people and destroy their culture. Much like the way Native Americans were treated when we were trying to colonize the Americas. These false images caused Chinua Achebe to respond with a book entitled Things Fall Apart that realistically depicted the Igbo society.
