Parkinson's disease, also known as Parkinson disease or PD, is a degenerative disorder of the central nervous system that impairs motor skills and speech. This disease belongs to a group of conditions called movement disorders. It is characterized by muscle rigidity, tremors, a slowing of physical movement, and in some extreme cases, a loss of physical movement and balance. Parkinson�s can be the result of too little dopamine being released to a particular part of the brain (3). The primary symptoms are the results of excessive muscle contraction. Secondary symptoms may include high level cognitive dysfunction and subtle language problems. PD is both chronic and progressive. Many families have to learn to live with this disease; by reading this paper, a general understanding of how the disease can be obtained, symptoms can be identified, and one may learn of the new ways that this disease is being treated.
