“I sing not, Siren-like, to tempt,” said John Donne to one of his friends. This is one of the most famous quotes and it characterizes John Donne as well as his poetry. John Donne was very special among all the other poets formed in a group called Metaphysical poets. Donne’s life is characterized by contradictions. The endless tension is apparent in his poems and it made Donne’s poetry original, unique, and unforgettable. The fight of spiritual and physical love in his poetry represents this contradiction. It is apparent that the fight does not have a winner. Nonetheless, this fight enriches his poetry. The struggle between the spiritual and the physical is a constant feature of Donne’s poetry and it is his hallmark. His poetry would never be famous, if there was not the permanent struggle. The best evidence that can support this argument is his poetry itself. I will examine the tension between the spiritual and the physical in Donne’s poems “The Flea,” “Valediction: Forbidding Mourning,” and “The Canonization,” and explain its meaning.
