Comparison on Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s “The Yellow Wallpaper” & Kate Chopin’s “The Story of an Hour” “The Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin and “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman share the same view of the subordinate position of women in the late 1800’s. They share the same them, but convey the message differently in terms of style and quality. The two short stories are about women who are fighting for freedom, happiness, and the ability to be expressive in any way possible. Both stories demonstrate the devastating effects on the mind and body that result from an individual living under the imposed will of another. Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s story “The Yellow Wallpaper” was written during a time of great change. In the early to mid-nineteenth century, a certain ideology positioned American middle class women as the spiritual and moral leaders of their home. Social ideals suggested that a woman’s place was to remain in the in the private domain of the home, where she should carry out her prescribed roles of wife and mother.
