How far do you agree with the statement that ‘nothing is as it seems in Much Ado About Nothing’ In 1598 when Shakespeare wrote the play 'Much Ado About Nothing’, the “Nothing” of the title would have been pronounced “Noting.” Therefore, the play’s title could read: 'Much Ado About Noting.' Noting is one of the plays main preoccupations, making observations that are integral to the plot demonstrates and emphasises its importance. The Elizabethan audience would have spotted the pun in the title straight away and therefore known that there will be a lot of misinterpretations with observing, listening and writing. We do not pick up the deeper connotations as quickly as an Elizabethan would, simply because of an altering pronunciation. Nearly all the characters in the play partake in a role where they go on to pretend to be something which they are not. In this role they endeavour to intentionally mislead the other characters.
