Film Review: Battles of Algiers The film Battles of Algiers, directed by Gillo Pontecorvo, is a heartfelt portrayal of the struggles that 1950s Algerians underwent in an attempt to overthrow the French rule. It is an extremely realistic film, especially when it came to the scenes of resistance, torture, and terrorism. This film also can serve as a parallel to today�s wars as well as various others in the past. The film Battles of Algiers can almost make you sympathize with the terrorist. The film is definitely biased in the way it demonized the French military and portrays the Algerians in an emotional, romantic light. The film does however give both sides� reasons for acting in the manners in which they do. Pontecorvo shows both sides� motives as well as their contradictions; The French wanting to maintain their control over foreign territory but doing so in an almost Nazi-like fashion, and the Algerians wishing to be liberated from the French but going to extreme measures such as terrorist bombings. In the end however, one can�t help finding themselves rooting for Ali La Ponte......
