In 1914 at the outbreak of war, job opportunities for women were limited. One of the reasons for this was the strong class division. Working, middle and upper-class women were treated very differently. Women were tremendously affected by these classes. Whichever class they belonged to, determined how they would live their lives and what job opportunities they would have. At that time Britain was a rich superpower, ruled by a massive empire, yet most women were poor. Women were also treated as inferior to men. They had fewer rights, couldn�t get jobs as well as the men and were always paid less. Job opportunities for working-class women were at the lowest. Factories eagerly employed women as they were paid less than men. The majority of working-class women worked operating machinery in large industrial factories. Despite the 1842 Mines Act stated that women, along with children were not to work in the mines, many women were illegally employed in underground mines. Women were also employed in small workshops.
