Analysing the Narrative and Generic Elements and How these are used to Create Meaning in a sequence from “Reservoir Dogs” A film’s narrative provides the structure through which a director can tell a story. Within mainstream cinema, narrative conventions are generally adhered to, to aim at the mass audiences who prefer a predictability of story movement. Unconventional, avant-garde filmmakers such as David Lynch (Mulholland Drive), Gus Van Sant (Elephant) and Alejandro González Iñárritu (Amores Perros), however, commonly defy narrative conventions to divert audience expectations and to deceive their spectators. Generic conventions are also commonly played with within independent cinema to challenge audience expectations and to inject originality within the piece. In this essay I will examine the narrative and generic conventions present within the opening sequence of Reservoir Dogs and the way in which these conventions are used to create meaning for the film’s audience.
