WAR: Honorable or Horrible? When reading poetry on the subject of war, a person’s feelings concerning the subject are awakened. “My friend, you would not tell with such zest, to children ardent for some desperate glory, the old lie: Dulce et decorum est” (“It is sweet and fitting to die for one’s country”). The reader can sense from this the argument of serving and dying for your country is not glorious or honorable, but in fact painful and horrifying. There are several poems to be looked at, all varying in style and of different manners of war; such as sending men off to war, horrors of war, and the after effects of war. In the “Send-off” Wilfred Owen talks of men going off to war. The tone conveys an intense foreboding atmosphere. The use of darkening by Owen can lead the reader to the assumption that these men left in the evening. “And lined the train with faces grimly gay.” The juxtaposition of the word ‘grimly’ against ‘gay’ suggests these men are happy going off to war; but a person can assume that deep down; these men are feeling anguish and low in confidence ......
