Hitler’s consolidation of power began with his appointment to the post of Chancellor of Germany. Naturally this would be a strong factor towards any consolidation of power. However, due to the constant feuding of Kurt von Schleicher and Frank von Papen for the chancellorship, and Papen’s deal with Paul von Hindenburg (Chancellor until 1933), despite his hatred for Hitler, to appoint Hitler as chancellor after his death. This would keep the people happy with Hitler as head of government, and appointing Papen as vice-chancellor to keep Hitler ‘boxed in’ in a coalition government. This is considered as one of the biggest misjudgments of all time. Papen didn’t quite understand the support that Hitler had behind him and appointing him as chancellor gave just the boost he needed. He banned the KPD and the SPD, some of the Nazi’s healthiest adversaries, heeding way for all other parties to dissolve themselves.
